My Linux Setup

After spending a considerable amount of time trying to make this or that work under Linux, and finding several invaluable web resources helping me to do so, I've decided to create one myself. This page aims to be a small, relatively comprehensive listing of all the major tasks I've undertaken, or obstacles I've climbed with Linux. If any of you out there have anything you'd like to add to this listing, please don't hesitate to contact me and let me know.

The first thing that comes to mind is XFree86 on my laptop. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite 1800; Model PS181C-00CET (the specs can be found here). I had a couple of particular things in mind when I (re)configured XFree86, such as getting the display right on my 13.3" TFT display, and making my combination of pointing devices work (presently an embedded pointer ("nipple") on the keyboard, an external PS/2 wheel mouse, and an external USB optical wheel mouse). With only a couple of minor glitches, all combinations seem to work thus far. My next feat will be configuring XFree86 to use my external SVGA and/or Composite video connectors for a multi-monitor setup, rather than simply emulating the image on my TFT display.

I've recently come into control over several domains (quite abruptly, I might add) and was faced with a method of keeping their DNS pointers up-to-date on a high-speed business ADSL line with a dynamic IP. To accomplish this task, I created update_zones.sh to keep the pointers updated should the IP address change. I may come up with a more elegant solution later, but for the moment it seems to do a more than amicable job. It accomplishes its task via a combination of BIND and nsupdate.
